Community at the Centre: Hands Up Mallee’s Call for Local Voices
Mildura, VIC – Hands Up Mallee (HUM) is calling on local community members to join its governance groups and contribute to long-term change in the region.
Since 2015, HUM has brought together local people, services, and government to work in new ways, with the goal of creating better outcomes for children, young people, and families across the Mildura region. Guided by the belief that lasting change happens when it’s led by community, HUM has developed a unique governance model that ensures local voices are central to every decision.
Hands Up Mallee’s governance model is led by three groups: the Yarning Group, the Collaborative Governance Group (CGG), and the Backbone Team. The Yarning Group provides Aboriginal cultural leadership, ensuring work is culturally safe and grounded in local knowledge. The Collaborative Governance Group brings together community, services, and government to set priorities, guide strategy, and keep equity at the core. The Backbone Team supports both groups, driving strategy, collaboration, and connection to community voice.
This year, HUM is inviting new members to join both the Collaborative Governance Group and the Yarning Group — offering local people the opportunity to be part of a model of shared leadership shaping long-term change in the region.
“Joining these groups is a chance to have your voice heard and make a real difference in the future of our community,” said Hands Up Mallee Executive Officer Jane McCracken.
Members commit to monthly meetings for at least 12 months, with occasional workshops or events. Support is available for transport, childcare, and accessibility needs, and members may choose to receive a small payment in recognition of their contribution.
